Terms of Service

1. Service description

Portable English is an online English language learning platform. We provide lesson content, vocabulary tools, audio pronunciation, spaced repetition flashcards, and progress tracking for advanced learners of English (B2 and above). A free tier gives access to one lesson per day. Premium subscriptions unlock the full lesson library and all platform features.

The service is operated as a sole trader business under English law. By using Portable English you agree to these Terms of Service.

2. Eligibility

You must be at least 16 years of age to create an account. By registering, you confirm that you meet this requirement. If you are under 18, you should review these terms with a parent or guardian before signing up.

3. Accounts

You must provide accurate and complete information when creating an account. You are responsible for keeping your login credentials confidential. You must not share your account with others or create multiple accounts to circumvent access restrictions.

You are responsible for all activity that occurs under your account. If you suspect unauthorised access, notify us immediately at hello@portableenglish.co.

4. Free plan

The free plan is provided without charge and includes one new lesson every day, interactive exercises, audio on every lesson, a Vocabulary List of up to 20 saved words, and Pronunciation Studio access for up to 5 words. We reserve the right to adjust free plan limits at any time, with reasonable notice.

5. Premium plan — payments and trials

Premium subscriptions are available on a monthly or annual basis. All subscriptions begin with a 7-day free trial. You will not be charged during the trial period.

After the trial ends, your chosen plan renews automatically. Monthly plans renew each month; annual plans renew each year. You authorise us (through Stripe) to charge your payment method on each renewal date unless you cancel beforehand.

Cancellation. You can cancel at any time from your Settings page or through the Stripe billing portal. Cancellation takes effect at the end of your current billing period; you retain full Premium access until then. If you cancel during the free trial, no charge is made and your account moves to the free plan immediately.

Refunds. We do not offer refunds for subscription periods already paid. If you believe you were charged in error, contact us promptly at hello@portableenglish.co and we will review the situation.

Price changes. We may change subscription prices with at least 30 days' notice. Your existing subscription will not be affected until the next renewal date.

6. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

• Attempt to reverse-engineer, scrape, or systematically copy content from the platform.
• Share your subscription access or login credentials with others.
• Use automated tools to access or interact with the service.
• Use the service for any unlawful purpose or in violation of any applicable law.
• Interfere with, disrupt, or attempt to gain unauthorised access to the platform or its infrastructure.
• Upload or transmit any malicious code, spam, or harmful content.

We reserve the right to suspend or terminate any account that breaches these rules, without notice or refund.

7. Intellectual property

All lesson content, audio recordings, platform design, and materials are owned by or licensed to Portable English. You may not reproduce, distribute, publicly display, or create derivative works from any platform content without our prior written permission.

Your personal data — saved vocabulary, pronunciation entries, and progress records — belongs to you. You may delete it at any time from your Settings page.

8. Termination

You may delete your account at any time from the Settings page. Deletion is immediate and permanent — all your data is removed from our systems.

We may terminate or suspend your account if you breach these Terms, engage in fraudulent activity, or if we are required to do so by law. Where feasible, we will give you notice and the opportunity to resolve the issue before taking action.

9. Limitation of liability

The platform is provided "as is" and "as available." We make no warranty that the service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or fit for any particular purpose. We are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages arising from your use of the service, including loss of data, loss of profit, or loss of business.

Our total liability to you for any claim arising from these Terms or your use of the service shall not exceed the amount you paid us in the 12 months preceding the claim. Nothing in these Terms limits our liability for fraud, death, or personal injury caused by negligence.

10. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. Any disputes shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.

We may update these Terms from time to time. Material changes will be communicated by email or a notice on the platform at least 14 days before taking effect. Continued use of the service after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.
